Talbot said:

He said his driver would be in Brisbane the following week to pick up the forklifts and pay for them.

As arranged, the driver turned up, equipped with a trailer truck, and they set about the transaction: the driver completed the requisite paperwork, inputting details from a legitimate company, and then paid for the vehicles with a bank guaranteed cheque for $28,600, the exact price. He then left with forklifts, and Talbot went to the bank to deposit the cheque. The shock for Talbot came the following morning, when the bank contacted him and informed him that the cheque had been registered as stolen, and, accordingly, had been ‘dishonoured’ by the CBA. Talbot stated that this issue with the bank was still not resolved, and is due to meet the ombudsman in order to discuss it further.

The two forklifts in question are a Hyster H150F, weighing 7 tons, and a Komatsu FD25-14, weighing 2.5 tons. Talbot states that the Hyster model is rather unusual, as it is configured with the first carriage in front the second, as opposed to the second carriage being on top of the first, which is the more conventional set-up. Talbot is keen for people to be on alert for a both of the vehicles saying:

If you should hear anything of these forklifts, or anyone enquiring about parts for these forklifts, we would appreciate you contacting us straight away.

Talbot also informed both the police and the public that the man who made the initial contact had a Southern English, or London accent, and furthermore, he believes that his given location of Moree, New South Wales, was red herring. This is because he observed that the truck trailer driven by the pick-up man was old, battered and had a flat tyre, leading Talbot to believe that it the forklifts were not destined to go far. Police are attempting to gather CCTV footage, hoping to be able to better identify the truck.

Steven Münchenberg, the chief executive of the ABA (Australian Bankers’ Association), explained that bank cheques are not different form normal cheques, inn regards to the fact that they must be cleared by the bank. This clearance usually takes 3 days, as the system involves hard copy, and is not digitalised. Münchenberg said:

If an individual/merchant needs the funds quickly, a valid cheque can be cleared on the day it is presented at the bank if you ask for a ‘special clearance’ which often attracts a fee.

In fact, bank cheques must be cleared, in order to establish that it is not a forgery, or a stolen cheque as in this case, or subject to court ordained payment restrictions. Münchenberg said:

If an individual is selling a car, for example, you could go to the bank with the purchaser of your car and ask for a special clearance. This means that a valid cheque can be cleared on the day it is presented. Fees apply for this service. Individuals also have the option of transferring funds into their bank accounts through internet banking, which can be quicker than waiting for cheque clearance.

The case was heard at the Magistrates’ Court in Wodonga, and Visy Packaging Pty Ltd were convicted, following which they were ordered to pay the $112,500, as well as being put on an adjourned undertaking for 1 year.

The cause of the prosecution was an accident which occurred in December 2008. A female member of staff was came to a cross junction inside the Visy warehouse in Wodonga, and stopped as she saw a forklift truck approaching. Thinking that the operator was gesturing at her to cross the junction, she stepped forward, and another forklift truck, coming from the other direction, struck her, causing injuries to her leg, which were so serious that they required the application of skin grafts. The accident bore similarities to another, which had occurred at Swire Cold Storage, and as a result of which the company were also convicted and subjected to a hefty fine. Ross Pilkington, the manufacturing and logistics director for Worksafe Victoria, said:

On average, three people are seriously injured by forklifts every week in Victorian workplaces, a totally unacceptable situation. Many of these injuries are due to lack of separation between forklifts and workers. WorkSafe inspectors can’t monitor every workplace 24 hours a day – Victorian workplaces need to get the message that people and forklifts don’t mix, and it’s up to employers to make sure they’re separated.

Worksafe issued Visy with prohibition and improvement notices, which demand that the firm revamps its practices, and ensures that pedestrian workers and forklifts are separated.

Ross Pilkington said:

Despite years of communicating the message that people and forklifts don’t mix, workplace behaviour does not reflect the fact that these machines can seriously hurt or kill if they hit someone – regardless of the speed at which they travel. In this case, we’re talking about a workplace with a production area and two warehouses where forklifts are operating. There were no physical barriers or marked walkways separating forklifts from pedestrians – instead, they were told to communicate with eye contact and hand signals. Visy clearly failed in their duty to keep their workers safe – this was an entirely avoidable incident for which should never have happened.

Blake is orchestrating a 50-strong team, so as to transform the venue a setting for the fourth leg of the ‘Hyundai Uncensored’ tour, and he is doing so under the auspices of the Interpublic Group of Cos’ experiential marketing department. The aim of the event is to imprint the Hyundai brand on the local consciousness by letting them drive a range of cars- a Hyundai Sonata, a Honda Accord and a Toyota Camry- on a course which has everything from chicanes and hairpin bends, to conditions which simulate frozen roads, high speed straight track and high octane evasive manoeuvring. It is now a mere 24 hours until the event begins, and there is still a huge amount of work to be done, including: putting up vast canopy tents, and securing them with weights; unloading Hyundai car cars, and masses of furniture from a shipping container; wiring the necessary electrics, and then securing it and ensuring that it is safe; building the aforementioned driving course, a task which requires 14 drivers from Precision Dynamics International, and finally, the erection of dozens of Hyundai brand signs. Blake Kanickij watches men carry boxes and supervises the marshalling of a fork lift, whilst Doc McKinney, the head of the Precision Dynamics International cadre, begins to navigate what will become the course. From his car, by way of a short-wave radio, he issues instructions to his men, to move cones, tighten a bend, and so on. When the customers are experiencing the course, they will always have a PDI driver with them, and so they need to familiarise themselves with the course. McKinney has worked on these projects with Hyundai for the past six years, having previously been a stunt driver for Hollywood studios, and he is convinced of the effects of these promotions.

When I first started working with Hyundai, he said, it was clear that consumers just thought of Hyundai as a throwaway car and one that they didn’t give any serious consideration to. I have seen that perception change 180 degrees over the years. And, in my opinion, it’s things like this that are responsible for that. Consumers can drive these cars in a hassle-free environment and in conditions you won’t get in a road test with a dealer. No one is in sales mode here forcing them to sign or buy anything.

The strategy behind the promotion is first give the consumers an experience of a Hyundai vehicle, and then to have the reinforce that experience as positive. Once they have driven the course, there is relaxing lounge area, Hyundai branded of course, where they are encouraged to relax, drink Starbucks coffee and use the I-Pads which are provided. As they talk about their positive experiences, in such a positive environment, they reinforce each others experience. The I-Pads, Hyundai hope, will then be used to wax lyrical about, you’ve guessed it, Hyundai.

Creative Director Jaime Cabrera, who designed the lounge space, said:

This place is wired to let consumers tell their friends about the experience. The iPads are loaded with Twitter and Facebook, and you can check in on Foursquare when you get here. We set this up so they will hang around, talk to us and other consumers about Hyundai, have a frappuccino and listen to music after they test drive the cars.

Another way that is achieved is the option to take a video camera into a Hyundai car, close the door, and speak their mind about the experience. They get a lot of people raving about how great it was, a couple of complainers, and, in one case, a chap who extemporised a song about the experience.

Hyundai’s fondness for innovative marketing strategies began under their erstwhile marketing chief Joel Ewanick, who also instigated a campaign to get advertising programming at huge events, such as the Super Bowl. He also pioneered a revolutionary scheme which allowed customers to return a newly purchased Hyundai if they lost their job.
However Monique Morin Kumpis, Hyundai’s manager for experiential marketing and strategic alliances, believes that actually driving the car is the best way of all:

Ad campaigns tell a story, she said, but there’s nothing there for a consumer to touch and feel. The key is letting consumers draw their own conclusions but to do that they need to have the Hyundai experience. This is beyond tents and cones. With everything they can do here it becomes an experience and the more we can get them driving our cars and telling their friends about us, the better.

Eezehaul’s commercial director, Simon Duggan, said:

Our original warehouse was around 30,000 sq ft. We looked around for other sites that offered greater capacity but purpose built units of the size that we wanted are relatively scarce in the South East. The new facility has nine loading docks – which is ideal – but it needed additional office space, racking and other cosmetic changes.

One of the most pressing issues was the need to construct a racked storage facility. This responsibility was eventually given to Jungheinrich UK, which aside from supplying forklifts also deals with storage and racking scenarios. Simon Duggan said:

We met Jungheinrich at a trade show where the company was exhibiting and were impressed by what they had to offer.

Jungheinrich delivered a set-up which features in excess of 5000 pallet areas, a 7.8 metre high racking structure and customised wide aisles, in order to allow ground level case picking and full crate picking from the upper level to coexist effectively. Jungheinrich also provided a refit of Eezehaul’s fleet of forklift trucks, upgrading their old diesel models to a fleet of electric trucks, which are compliant with the ISO 14001 environmental standard. What is more, the electric models run with minimal noise levels, which is better suited to the new site, as it is adjacent to a residential area. Another benefit is the battery life of the vehicles, as Simon Duggan explains:

We have lots of forklift truck movements. For our pallet network activities we unload double deck trailers and cross dock loads before loading pallets on to delivery vehicles. This work tends to peak in the early hours of the morning and again in the evening. At other times throughout the day the trucks are used to de-stuff incoming containers and put away loads in the pallet racking.

After the construction of the racking system, Jungheinrich and Eezehaul liaised further, with Junghienrich performing a rigorous analysis of the Eezehaul’s needs. Once they had established exactly what was required, they supplied Eezehaul with a fleet of electric counterbalance forklift trucks, with reach and stand-on models as well. The vehicles are models from Jungheinrich’s EFG series, which are renowned for their minimal battery usage due to advanced AC technological systems, with the vehicles requiring only one change of battery per two shifts of work. Jungheinrich showed by demonstration that their EFG vehicles are able to operate for more than half an hour longer than competitor’s vehicles, before requiring a battery change; on the scale which Eezehaul operate, that can mean the unloading and stacking of an extra lorryload. One of the key features of the EFG trucks’ battery is the ability to be ‘topped up’: the door to the battery enables swift and easy access, and so recharging and miscellaneous maintenance operations can be performed efficiently.

Eezehaul utilise the counterbalance trucks in the unloading of trailers which have docked at their facility. Pallet loads which are moving through the premises are taken, by forklift, to delivery trucks or to a docking zone. Pallets which are destined for storage are taken to the racking area, where they are placed on the appropriate level of racking by Jungheinrich ETV reach trucks. The reach trucks used are customised models, which were re-tooled in Jungheinrich’s dedicated centre in Dresden, Germany. Steve Richmond, the general manager of Jungheinrich’s Systems and projects division, said:

Because trucks in our ‘Ready To Go’ range are rebuilt to the same high quality at the Dresden facility, they offer a very cost effective proposition for the operation, which means that these fully refurbished models will give many years of efficient and productive service.

One of the toughest tasks that Jungheinrich and Simon Duggan had to undertake was establishing exactly how many vehicles would be needed to comprise the fleet, as the projected throughput of the new site was extremely hypothetical. however, Simon Duggan believes that they got the fleet exactly right, saying:

The mix of counterbalance, reach and pallet trucks that we are operating has proved ideal but we have the option to acquire additional machines, or increase our capacity with short term rental trucks as our throughput increases.

Steve Richmond form Jungheinrich said:

The fact that Jungheinrich could supply a full range of materials handling equipment and design and build Eezehaul’s racking system was an attractive proposition. It is something of a cliché, but being able to offer a ‘one-stop-shop’ meant we were able to simplify the project considerably for Eezehaul’s management team.

When we received a phone call from the hirers at Thurrock Hospital alerting us of the theft, we notified TRACKER straight away. Stuart Chapman, the Police Relationship Manager for TRACKER, said:

In this particular case, the vehicle in question was found in a nearby farm yard, along with three other vehicles suspected to be stolen. A case like this demonstrates how TRACKER goes far beyond the basic capabilities of the system, but by the service that the TRACKER team and the police provides. It really is essential for plant hire companies to take extra measures in securing their vehicles. Doing this can reduce insurance costs and increase the likelihood of a stolen vehicle being recovered.

The transmitter retains its effectiveness even when the vehicle is interred inside a container or garage, and so for owners of plant vehicles it can bring security and measureless peace of mind.

Forklift trucks powered by LPG now account for 30.2 percent of counterbalance forklift truck sales in 2010, and are still growing. Jim Moyes, a forklift expert for Calor, believes that people are steadily coming around to the pros of LPg, saying:

The benefits of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the forklift market have been widely recognised over recent years with all of the major equipment manufacturers now offering LPG models in their product ranges. LPG avoids the lengthy charging periods associated with electric trucks and, as a cleaner burning fuel than diesel, LPG results in less potential for oil contamination and reduced overall engine wear. What’s more, lower carbon emissions from engines means that they can be used inside in sensitive environments as well as outside on more difficult terrains.

Mr Moyes also explained how Calor, as supplier, help firms to fully utilise their forklifts, saying:

We work closely with customers to identify their individual needs and offer a fuel solution totally tailored to their operation. LPG supply goes far beyond merely the supply of gas or the fuel price. Discussions with an LPG expert with the right technical capability can ensure a hassle free conversion to LPG as well as providing a package of ongoing technical support, safety assurance and training.

Calor will be represented at the IMHX at the Birmingham NEC in Novemebr, where a number of their forklift experts will be present, in order to answer questions and explain the benefits of LPG fuelled forklift trucks. The demonstration zones are a crucial aspect of the Toyota Material Handling stand, as it allows the customers to engage with the products, and see for themselves how efficient they can be. Each of the three zones will have a different focus; powered counterbalance forklifts, hand pallet trucks and warehouse forklift trucks.

One of the models that will make its debut is the new Toyota Traigo HT electric counterbalance forklift truck. This vehicle is available in capacities ranging from 6.5 tonnes to 8.5 tonnes, and is specifically designed to be able to perform all of the heavy lifting operations that engine powered forklifts are capable of, but with the cleanliness of electricity. Visitors and prospective clients will be able to observe the equipment, and Toyota experts will also be present and available to answer any questions. The experts will be from a range of disciplines, including specialists in products, sales, rental, operation and training.

Toyota’s series of master-classes will be a first for the IMHX, and they are designed to disseminate some of Toyota’s accumulated knowledge and experience, and hopefully to show people how to increase efficiency in their business. The first seminar will address the Toyota Production System, a business model which can be applied to all businesses, and is proven improve efficiency. There will also be seminars entitled ‘Driving Down Costs’ and ‘Managing Your Assets’, which demonstrate the benefits of proper fleet management, which can minimise extraneous costs. Through media surveillance, we determined that both incidents happened almost simultaneously. They were just within a few minutes of each other.

The surveillance tapes show fork lift trucks being used to scoop the ATM’s off the ground, and McBride confirmed that both forklifts were stolen, having gone missing from the site of the under-construction Powdersville High School. The first ATM was stolen at 4.50 am, at the People’s Bank situated where Hood Road and Highway 153 intersect. Ten minutes later, the Pinnacle bank on Anderson Road was hit.

McBride said, After the ATMs were removed, it appears that the ATMs were loaded on a pickup truck … and, of course, driven away from the bank, before intimating that they were of the belief that a gang of perhaps four individuals were involved, saying, Investigators actually recovered the two pickup trucks that were used in the theft of the ATMs and also recovered both ATM machines. They’re currently processing those for more evidence.

McBride also confirmed that both of the pick-up trucks had been reported stolen prior to the mornings events, whilst the forklift trucks were merely borrowed, being returned to the construction site. Tommy Wiggins, one of the site’s superintendents, mused:

It was strange that they were able to drive up the road without anybody noticing. They had to steal equipment to go steal something else. You know, that takes a lot of guts, so to speak.

than conventional forklifts.

All of the new Toyota range is equipped with the exclusive Toyota System of Active Stability (SAS), which is a system designed to maximise safety and efficiency. Workplace safety is hugely important, as it can result in downtime, fines, damage, and myriad other costs, and so the SAS is a crucial innovation. The system monitors every action that is undertaken by a forklift, and can sense the presence of factors or variables which may cause unbalancing or instability. If and when it does detect these factors, it will automatically initiate corrective and preventive measures. Functions that the system can control, for example fork levelling, the angle of mast tilting and the swing lock cylinder, are all able to keep the vehicle stable and productive. Other aspects of the new range of forklifts include a maximum speed setting, which makes it impossible for a vehicle to travel at an unsafe speed, and dashboard designed to sit low in order to increase visibility.

The new range of forklifts also features the Toyota AC2 power system, another exclusive Toyota system. The AC2 combines the Toyota 48-volt motor with ‘controllers’, which allow for maximum lifting speeds. It also features regenerative braking, by way of the ‘accel-off’ function, which simultaneously re-powers the battery. The range is also designed ergonomically, in order to maximise the performance of the operator, by reducing fatigue and discomfort. The steering column and steering wheel are slim and and adjustable, for effortless manipulation, and a digital monitor displays information on all aspects of operational performance. Normally, Poundland’s warehouse staff utilise 45 low-level forklift order pickers, but the Christmas period brings problems, because the 60 or so extra vehicles that they need must also be equipped with specialist features.

We fit radio data terminals to the order pickers, which are configured to carry two pallets at once, said Gillespie, We also send a team to the warehouses to fit the masts on the reach trucks as they are too high to be transported in one piece.
